February 2012 Philly MQG Meeting

What a fun meeting we had this month, yet again!

Monthly Challenge:
We shared our challenge projects made using scraps from last meeting's swap! The idea was to create a "Scrappy Modern" project incorporating either improvisation or asymmetry (or both!).

Tricia made two projects- A curved pieced wall
hanging using a pattern from Pretty in Patchwork: Doll Quilts...

...and two pot holders! Can you guess who's scraps she got?

Janet gets scrappy! She used asymmetry AND improv, and
she really used negative space well too!

Then we unveiled our next swap...
Make 6 Japanese + and x quilt blocks to swap at the March meeting! (If you want to make more than 6, we'll swap the extras too.)

Bobbi showed us examples and gave us a handout with directions. (Thank you, Bobbi!!)

Charity Project:
Angie shared a charity project that we will be working on. We’re making "I Spy" quilts for children. We worked together to iron, cut and pre-assemble 5 inch squares of novelty prints to be used to make 9-patch blocks. We all took some home to work on for the next meeting. We plan to put a modern spin on these quilts, which we will unveil when they are further along.

Sewing Summit 2012!

Last Saturday the PMQG held our first (and I hope annual!) mini "Sewing Summit". It was a great day and we had a great space to work in thanks to one of our members ...

The school room was a beautiful creative space for us to sew in! Huge windows, large tables, extra lighting, a kitchen.. what else would you want?

The day ran from 10am-5pm and consisted of two workshops, free sewing time and lunch. The first workshop was a color theory class by member/fabric designer/quilt pattern designer Jessica Levitt.

Jessica brought stacks and stacks of fabrics (which I wanted to hide and take all of it home with me - that girl has a fantastic stash!) for us to play with. Jessica lectured, showed examples on a big screen and had us break into groups and do a number of hands-on activities with fabrics and paint chips.

We were given stacks of fabrics and we were to sort them in value order - harder than it sounds! With the paint chips, we were to find all of the colors of the color wheel. It was fun! Great workshop!!!!!

We even had a couple Featherweights with their very own tables - very cool!

The afternoon workshop was with Sujata Shah who taught a class on curved or "organic" piecing.

Before she taught us her technique, she showed us a number of examples of quilts she had made.

This was a technique workshop - no real pattern. Her sewing technique is something you need to see in person and definitely needs some practice!

We finished the afternoon working on our curved piecing.

You can see the gentle curves. Denise said she wants to make this larger and possibly use it as a background for some applique!

All in all, it was a great day. We are all looking forward to our next guild sewing night! Thank you to everyone who helped make this day happen!

Member Spotlight on... Susan DiBartolo!

Susan is the owner of The Village Quilter in downtown Mount Holly, NJ.

Susan has a long love of sewing! She began making doll clothes when she was 6, and by 13 she started making clothing and teddy bears on her new Singer sewing machine.

With a degree in Marketing, Susan has been very entrepreneurial with her passion for sewing. She ran her own window treatment company for 10 years and then when the opportunity was right she opened up her quilt shop in Mount Holly.
