Lizzy House at Philly MQG

The Philly Modern Quilt Guild was thrilled to host Lizzy House about a week ago for a lecture and workshop.  Lizzy's lecture on Friday night focused on her path to designing fabric and the love she cultivated along the way for quilting.  The audience had a wonderful time learning about her story, which was heartfelt, inspirational, and overall quite entertaining.

On Saturday, a group of about 20 quilters returned to our meeting venue to learn to make Lizzy's Meadow Quilt.  It became apparent right away why it is so important to learn to make this quilt from Lizzy herself.  She was a fantastic teacher - very kind and knowledgeable - and she took time to meet with every participant individually to discuss their plans for the quilt.  We even had a chance to get a sneak peak of her upcoming fabric line!

If you have a chance to take a workshop with Lizzy, we highly encourage you to do so!  You are sure to learn something new in a very inviting environment.  See below for some more fun photos from our Lizzy House events.  If the slide show below doesn't work, visit the gallery direct link instead.

Philly MQG August 2015 Meeting Recap

We had a low-key meeting on this hot August meeting night.  See below for a brief recap.

Icebreaker:  Dairy Queen or Rita's??  Dairy Queen was the clear winner. We also discovered that people who aren't from the Philly area have no idea what Rita's is, or even water ice in general ... it seems that a water ice outing is necessary!

Show-and-Tell:  See slideshow below for some photos

Committee Breakout:  We got updates from the committees about upcoming projects, including the next retreat in November, social media (follow us on Instagram!), upcoming charity projects, and more!

Swaps:  We had a "Polaroid block" raffle/swap where everyone who brought one in got a chance to win all the blocks.  We had 53 blocks in total, which was a great turnout!  As a result, we split it up and had two lucky winners.  We also had a "blind" pin cushion swap.  See the slideshow for some photos of the swaps.

Upcoming Events:  We discussed the upcoming Lizzy House events (Lecture on Friday night and Workshop on Saturday) as well as the Mancuso quilt show exhibit.  We will be displaying about 40 awesome member quilts at the Mancuso Pennsylvania National Quilt Extravaganza XXII from September 17-20, 2015.  Come check it out!

We hope you can make it to the next meeting, which will be on September 15th, 2015!  We always welcome new members.

Thomas Knauer Workshop

The Philly Modern Quilt Guild is hosting Thomas Knauer for a workshop in January.  Thomas is an artist by training and used to teach at a university.  Over the past several years (after teaching himself to sew and quilt so he could make beautiful things for his daughter) Thomas has been designing fun and colorful fabric.  Thomas recently published a great quilting book called Modern Quilt Perspectives.  You can find out more about Thomas at his blog here:

Thomas gave a great lecture and trunk show to our guild in September (see blog post here) and we are thrilled to have him return to teach a workshop on designing your very own "secret code" quilt.  The workshop will be held on Sunday, January 18th, 2015 from 10 AM til 5 PM  at Olde City Quilts in Burlington, NJ.

We have a number of spots still available that we are opening to non-members.  The price will be $55 payable by PayPal.  If you would like to attend, please send us an e-mail (  We will send you a PayPal invoice and then you will need to submit your payment within 2 days to secure your spot.  All workshop fees are nonrefundable.  Please note that the workshop fee does not include lunch, so please plan to bring a bagged lunch or some money so you can grab lunch near the shop.

We look forward to seeing you there!
